Forum > Your game of the year

It's nearly the end of the year, and you know what that means? Endless lists of game of the year because nobody does anything interesting in the games industry over Christmas and new year for podcasters/bloggers to talk about.

We'll be employing this blatant way to hide the fact that I will be too drunk for that fortnight to do any show prep, and so I thought I'd give you all a chance to reduce my workload even more.

What's your game of the year, and why?

Minesweaper. Free. The end.

The Maw on xbox live arcade. Lots of fun. I enjoyed a play trough and my kids still play the game often.

Late arrival but prolly "The Saboteur" it's like GTAIV without all the annoying crap so it's Saints Row but I actually get to shoot Nazi's instead of being some mental gangster degenerate. Also classic cars, burlesque and WW2 Paris it's a winner ;-)

My game of the year is Age of Conan, which is ironic since I bought it in 08 and have been playing it since. But I'm going from what has kept me interested and entertained this year and no other MMO has come close to doing that as well as AoC has.

AoC has been revamped a lot in this year too, with drastic changes to itemization and the addition of new playfields and dungeons. It's now the way that it should have been at launch, with a stable client and DX10 graphics. Just wish they had launched it now instead of last year...

My Game of the year is Assassins Creed 1 & 2. Okay that's two games, and one of them is 2 years old already but I just got around to playing them and I'll be damn they are great fun games.

Of course, the games make me feel like they are a spiritual successor to the Thief games and I did love the first two of those a great deal.

DDO. I think it's a shame that it isn't some innovative title from a small studio but one goes where one thinks the fun will be and DDO has been a delightful surprise.

I'm also sorry to add another "game of the year" which is not in fact a game that came out this year.

Several of us have done so, I guess that in some ways the game of the year is an outmoded mid-90s concept itself.

Multiplayer game of the year has to be Modern Warfare 2 for me. Could have done with a few more maps from launch, but the sheer volume of things to do (achievements, unlocks, titles, callsigns, etc), more than make up for it. There's always a goal just on the horizon to keep tempting you back in.

Overall game of the year is too close to call at the moment. Right now I'd say Assassins Creed 2, but ask me again in a month or 2 and it's going to be Forza 3 that I'm coming back to again and again.

Borderlands would be my game of the year.

Graphics - brings a new look to FPS type games, and it even runs well on a spare PC I have that is over 6 years old!

Sound - atmospheric music really adds to the feel of the game, some of the music is composed by "Jesper Kyd" who was a favourite of mine way back in the 80's when he used to write music for the Amiga demo scene.

Humour - wacky humour running throughout the game, really hope that any sequel continues this theme.

Co-op play - the biggest appeal of the game for me. Never liked quake-style deathmatch battles, always more fun to work through a game with a few friends!

MMO of the year? Fallen Earth

DragonAge - really enjoyed story and gameplay.

Not brought many of the main games this year still playing with some old ones. Will pick them up in the sales next year.

Did buy L4D2 but this is L4D with a bow on. Did enjoy Empire Total war but one or two bugs were annoying.

But my game of the year is a game I brought without knowing anything about it just liked the idea. Osmos gets my vote for my game of the year. It won't win but I recommend having a look.

All the best,

Opps forgot a reason.

This was a game I knew nothing about before buying of Steam and that made the game more enjoyable for some reason. Like finding some music before it hits the charts.

But the game play was simple but technically correct and just a great little idea that had great music and atmospheric feel.

Borderlands or Forza would be my picks. Although Borderlands gets a bit dull after a while, but had great fun when I played through the 1st time. Forza is the best racing game I played, but the later races get a bit long, I liked the shorter ones from season 1 and 2 :).

MMO special mention: WOW patch 3.3. The LFG tool really breathed new life into the game, pretty weird, but it works very well. Also the skirmished of LOTRO deserve a shoutout ;).

Winner: LotRO. "One game to rule them all"

Runner-up: EVE. There's something about that game. Not sure what it is, but it's now time to update my skill queue & shoot a bunch of little red AI crosses...
